Day 2 dawned a little cloudier but still warm and with a fantastic atmosphere – the crowds built through the day, full of supporters and passers by checking out the action on the wall.
The Open Females competed on some tough routes, with great performances all around. Even Route 1 was tough this year and by route 3 the field was beginning to spread out a tiny bit. Only one climber, Rhoslyn Frugtniet, managed to top all three routes but Emily Garrod Cox (climbing for Entre-Prises UK), Eugenie Lee and Emma Twyford (climbing for DMM) were all close on her heels. Some brilliant splash downs from the female category – definitely gung ho and willing to take the fall!
The Open Male field as ever was the largest field in the event with a fantastic turnout from sponsored and Team GB athletes, well known local faces and those who wanted to simply take part in the all the fun. Three dimensional climbing was the order of the day – with the added element of the now infamous wrecking balls. The last route in particular saw some phenomenal climbing – even so 11 climbers managed to top all three routes!
The supporters stayed for much of the day and the sponsor tents added to the festival vibe. Once again safety crews provided by Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre ensured that everyone got out of the water safely and Dartmoor Search and Rescue stewarded the event, with Really Good First Aid on hand if needed. Event sponsors were out in show and for the gear fanatics there were great deals from Dewerstone, Taunton Leisure, Alpkit, Beta Climbing and Five Ten.
Outfit of the day clearly had to go the mermaid climbing in the last group of the Male Open. Dressed for the water – we hope the sequins weren’t dry clean only!
Tomorrow’s semi finals and finals promise another day of exciting climbing. Let’s hope the weather holds – if not we hear that AS Watersports have great deals on umbrellas!
