This year’s DWS kicked off in style with an amazing Under 16’s qualifying round. The sun shone, the crowds came out and the standard of climbing (and splashing) stunned everyone.
This year the Under 16 female category saw many of the best local and national young climbers competing with a number of the GB team taking part along with a great turn out from local climbers keen to support the event and test themselves against the best! The standard was high and we saw a record 22 girls top out on all 3 climbs with timings pretty close too. The event team decided to take all 22 girls who topped out through to the semis – it would be cruel to decide on the times given how closely they all competed.
The standards in the Under 16 Male category were just as high. The famous wrecking ball returned for the final climb and provided a spectacular end ‘splash’ for those who topped out – quite a few climbers understandably hung on as long as they could! Fifteen climbers topped all three problems with scores of 300 and three were very close with scores of 299 – so 18 lucky climbers will be returning on Sunday to compete in the Under 16 boys semi finals.
Splash of the day goes to Joshua B with the most incredible face plant we’ve seen so far. A brave and hardy competitor!
Congratulations to everyone who took part today. Full results are available to download below as well as a running order for those lucky enough to make it through to the Semi Finals on Sunday morning. Remember – registration is at 9am and climbing begins at 10am. Climber order decided by score/climb time from the qualifiers – the highest scoring climbers climb last!
